UK government questioned over Egypt “fugitives” living in country
Published in Bikya Masr on 16 - 01 - 2012

CAIRO: A member of Britain's House of Commons has reportedly asked for an inquiry into the reasons for the failure of the British government to extradite former Egyptian ministers and businessmen currently fugitives back to Egypt.
Andy Slaughter, a Labor Party MP, called on the UK government to investigate the reasons for allowing Egyptian “criminals” to remain in the safety of the UK while they face charges in Egypt.
Moataz Salah el-Deen, the head of the Popular Committee to restore “looted Egyptian money from abroad,” was quoted by the state-run MENA news agency as saying on Sunday that the UK government should comply with requests for extradition.
The list of runaway businessmen and ministers include ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's former Finance Minister Youssef Boutros Ghali, who fled the country during the revolution and was sentenced to 30 years after being convicted, in absentia, “of profiteering and corruption.”
El-Deen said that Slaughter will ask parliament why Boutros Ghali, and other ministers such as Rachid Mohammed Rachid, former minister of industry and trade and business tycoon Mamdouh Ismail are being allowed to remain, despite the fact that the Egyptian judiciary wants them extradited.
The British Independent newspaper reported last June that it had learned that Ghali is currently living openly in London.
The report on Sunday said that Slaughter, who is also the Shadow Justice Minister, says he was contacted by expatriate Egyptians living in his constituency who were furious that Ghali had been seen “wandering around London without impunity.”
El-Deen reported that the coordinator of the Popular Committee Mustafa Rajab held a meeting on Saturday with the British MP and discussed the British government's position on the Egyptian fugitives in corruption cases and wanted by the Egyptian government.
He pointed out that the meeting was also attended by Shenouda Shalaby, Secretary General of the Union of Egyptians in Britain, where they agreed to demand David Cameron, British Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party, to provide answers for the reasons the British government ignores Egypt`s requests for the extradition of these fugitives.
