CAIRO: Media rights advocacy group Reporters Without Borders has called for the immediate release of detained Syrian bloggers, including the recently arrested blogger and journalist Mohamed Ghazi Kannas. Syrian security officers arrested Kannas on January 3 as he was leaving his home in Damascus suburb of Kafr Sousseh. Kannas was active on Facebook and kept a blog called Kalemah Insan (A Man's Word) in which he wrote in Arabic on the ongoing governmental crackdown on popular uprisings across Syria. He only recently stopped posting in the blog “because of current events in Syria,” according to the Reporters Without Borders press release on his case. Under an independent media blackout, brave Syrian voices have risen above the repression of the Bashar al-Assad regime to cover the ongoing violence. Reporters Without Borders expressed concern over the growing list of Syrian media personnel who remain in detention.
