Beirut (dpa) – Syria's opposition called on Friday for nationwide weekly protests, the first since Arab League monitors arrived in the country to check Damascus' compliance with a peace plan. “Flock to the Main Squares” is the slogan used by the opposition activists for Friday's protests, called to show dismay with the observer mission, which opposition leaders say has failed to curb the government violence in civilian areas. Syrian activist Omar Idilbi, who is also the spokesman for the opposition Local Coordination Committees, called the chief of the Arab observer team, Sudanese General Mohammed Ahmed al-Dabi, a “senior officer with a regime that is notorious for repressing opposition too.” Syrian opposition leaders also complain that attacks by the government forces have increased since the arrival of the observers earlier this week. At least 98 people have been killed since Sunday, when the first team of observers arrived in Syria, according to the activists. The United Nations says more than 5,000 people have been killed in Syria's pro-democracy uprising since it began in mid-March.
