Hong Kong court upholds manslaughter verdict on Australian student

Hong Kong (dpa) – Hong Kong's Court of Appeal Wednesday upheld a manslaughter conviction against an Australian student who killed a taxi driver in a drunken late-night altercation.
The three-judge panel unanimously rejected a request to appeal the conviction by 24-year-old Kelsey Mudd, who was jailed for four years and three months in October 2010.
He was convicted in the death of Wong Chi-ming, 58, who was fatally dragged by his seatbelt after Mudd drove off with the taxi following a late-night row in June 2009.
Wong had gotten out of the cab with the engine still running, and got caught up in the seatbelt when he leaned in through the driver's door and tried to stop Mudd from driving off.
Mudd, who was more than five times over the drink-drive limit at the time of the incident, was convicted of manslaughter, taking a vehicle without authority, dangerous driving and drink-driving.
