CAIRO: An Egyptian law center filed a lawsuit on Sunday against Mohamed Tantawy, the head of the military ruling council, and Prime Minister Kamal Ganzoury to add the victims of the Maspero violence on October 9 to the list of the revolution's injured, which follows a special committee that was constructed to take care of those injured and their families. The Hisham Mubarak Law Center filed the lawsuit on Sunday on behalf of jailed blogger and activist Alaa Abdel Fattah and other members of families of those injured. On October 9, a large protest of thousands of Coptic Christians who were marching for greater rights and equality were attacked by military forces guarding the state TV building. The violence left 27 dead and hundreds wounded. Abdel Fattah is currently in jail while his case is being investigated by the public prosecutor over his alleged involvement in the clashes. Two eyewitnesses have accused Abdel Fattah of assaulting soldiers and attempting to steal weapons and an armored car outside the building. Abdel Fattah denies any involvement, saying that he was not in the scene when the violence erupted. He is accused of serious charges, including attempted murder and stealing weapons. “At the same time that the state insists on imprisoning Alaa Abdel Fattah and others from the Maspero case, it ignores the rights of the injured and the dead in the massacre,” said HMLC in a written statement on Sunday. “Their simplest rights are recognition and equality to the victims and the injured of the first wave of the uprising, those who fell betrayed by the oppressive institutes of the Egyptian state,” the statement continued. The injured and the dead's families receive a monthly allowance and the wounded are supposed to be treated at medical facilities, with the government paying the bills. Yet, many families have complained that they are being ignored by the committee that was started to help them and many have entered into an open-ended sit-in in Tahrir square since late last month.
