CAIRO: The families of those killed during Egypt's January 25 uprising have been denied their request to change the judges for the trial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak. An Egyptian court on Wednesday turned down the request to appoint a new panel of judges in the trial of the aging dictator, who is charged with ordering the killing of Egyptian citizens during the 18 days of protests that led to his removal. The lawyers of the families had filed a request to change the judges panel in September. The trial, which began in August, was initially aired live on national television, but has since been closed off to the public. There was no immediate explanation as to why the lawyers' request was rejected. Mubarak faces charges of ordering the killing of approximately 1,000 demonstrators during the January 25 revolution while also facing corruption charges alongside his two sons, Gamal and Alaa. Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and 6 of his former assistants as well as Hussein Salem, a fugitive businessman, are standing trial for corruption. The trial will resume on Dec. 28.
