Upsets leave BCS more open after Saturday
Published in Bikya Masr on 15 - 11 - 2011

With each passing week we have seen one undefeated team after another get taken down and this week was no exception. Stanford and Boise State suffered their first losses of the season and with them went their hopes of playing in the title game. Now there are three unbeaten teams left (LSU, OK State, and Houston) but only two are in position to play for the BCS National Championship. Here's the round up:
The No. 7 Oregon Ducks ran roughshod over No. 4 Stanford winning by 23. Oregon set the tone early by going for two on their opening touchdown. Stanford answered the visitor's score with one of their own but after exchanging touchdowns the Ducks turned on the jets. LaMichael James showed the nation why he is still a Heisman contender. The diminutive running back ran for 146 yards with three scores and time after time gutted the Stanford defense for large chunks of yardage. Derron Thomas had a nice evening with three TDs of his own. Projected first overall pick Andrew Luck finished the game with three scores but also tossed two interceptions. In the fourth he was intercepted by Duck defender Boseko Lokombo who took it 40 yards to the house and sealed the game.
Key Performers:
RB L. James ORE 22 carries 146 yards 3 TDs
QB D. Thomas ORE 11/17 155 yards 3 TDs
Unranked TCU wrangled the No. 5 Boise State Broncos 36-35. For the second year in a row the Broncos missed a last second field goal to preserve their unbeaten season. With 1:05 left in the fourth TCU quarterback Casey Pachall connected with wide receiver Brandon Carter for a 25 yard score. The touchdown put the Horned Frogs within one and after an earlier extra point miss head coach Gary Patterson decided to go for two and take the lead. Pachall rolled right and got the two points on a pass to Josh Boyce. Up 36-35 there was still time for a Broncos come back. Kellen Moore got his team as close as he could and it was up to freshman kicker Dan Goodale to nail the kick. His 36 yarder sailed wide right and with it sailed away Boise State's dreams of a shot at the BCS title game.
Key Performers:
QB C. Pachall TCU 24/37 473 yards 5 TDs 1 INT
RB DJ Harper BSU 24 carries 125 yards 2 TDs
