There wasn't much intrigue this week. At least on the field. Off the field was another story, but what matters are the games. As usually the first week of the college football season goes, this one was pretty standard. The big schools took care of business and moved on. The only marquee match-ups played out almost as expected, although LSU's smackdown on the Ducks from Oregon was somewhat surprising considering the offseason turmoil the Tigers had gone through. They looked much like the top team in the country and are likely to make a run for the title. Ohio State overcame its tumultuous summer with a dominating performance against lowly Akron. Boise State showed exactly why it was deserving of the number 5 preseason ranking by pummeling Georgia 35-21 in the Bulldogs backyard. It was another top notch victory on the national scene that once again makes the Broncos a national title contender. The only two upsets – a third was so so close by Utah State against defending champs Auburn – came to potential BCS spoiler TCU by an upstart Baylor team and seemingly perennial underachievers Notre Dame. Certainly, most of the country had little love lost for the Fighting Irish, whose struggles on the field continue. We didn't learn much from the opening week save for the good teams held their ground. Ohio State overcame, Boise State is, again, for real, Oklahoma and Alabama destroyed and the top 25 largely didn't struggle to get the W to start their campaigns. This all means we look to week 2, where still there is little real hope in any major upsets. Auburn plays at home versus #20 Mississippi State in what now must feel like a must-win game in order to preserve any hope they have at repeating. No. 12 South Carolina travel to Athens to face a Bulldogs squad reeling from their beat-down by the boys from Idaho and are likely to be on top of their game. Expect an upset there, especially considering the poor first half the Gamecocks showed in their opening week. Other than that, the first two weeks of College Football are not likely to spill any real blood as the top 25 will largely be 2-0 heading into the third week of the season.
