CAIRO: The British government is awaiting final court ruling regarding the return of nearly £40 million worth of frozen Egyptian assets in Britian, according to British Minister of State for Middle Eastern Affairs, Alistair Burt, in an interview with Egypt's official news agency, MENA, on Friday. The repatriation of frozen assets back to Egypt requires domestic legal proceedings within the United Kingdom. Before such legal actions can be completed, Egypt must first put forth conclusive evidence displaying that the frozen assets were in fact acquired illegally. “It would be for the Egyptian authorities to then make a request for enforcement of that order against assets located in the relevant part of the UK and for repatriation of any sums realized, stated Burt. The frozen assets are those of Egyptian officials who are believed to have illegally accrued assets prior to toppling of the Hosni Mubarak regime at the beginning of the year. The assets were frozen on March 22 upon the request of the Egyptian government. BM
