CAIRO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's envoy David Median is expected to arrive in Cairo today to continue discussions with Egyptian authorities about the upcoming Hamas-Israeli prison swap deal. Egypt has helped to broker the high-profile deal, which will include Gilad Shalit, an Israeli sergeant who was imprisoned by Hamas in June of 2006. On Tuesday, Israel announced that it would release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit. The exchange is expected to take place in two stages, with Israel expected to release the first 477 prisoners soon, and the other 550 at a later date. The swap is expected to take place at the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Today's meeting is slated to finalize the terms of the deal. Some see Egypt's role in the deal as a step towards normalization with Israel, as relations between the two countries have cooled significantly since the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak earlier this year.
