DUBAI: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) called on Thursday for an immediate meeting of the Arab League's foreign ministers to discuss the continued violence in Syria. The General Secretariat of the GCC mentioned in their statement that “given the continuing deteriorating situation in the Arab Republic of Syria and after coordination and consultation between the foreign ministers of the Cooperation Council of the Arab Gulf States, therefore GCC countries are going to hold an immediate meeting of the Council of the Arab States League at the level of foreign ministers to discuss the dire situation specially the syrian humanitarian situation and to discuss the methods of injecting blood and stopping the violence machine.” The call for an immediate meeting comes after the announcement of Nabil Al-Arabi, the new general secretary of the Arab League, on his willingness to continue negotiating with the Syrian government and the various opposition parties. The negotiations aim to reach a solution, under the patronage and assistance of the Arab League as well as to reach a formula that “ensures achievement of the immediate cessation of all acts of violence and to begin a comprehensive national dialogue lead to achieve the demand of the Syrian people and their aspirations for change, freedom and political reform.” Commenting on the call for an immediate meeting, Al Arabi stated that “Syria negotiations between the Arab foreign ministries didn't stop, on the contrary it's continuing and on more than one level.” He added that “the Arab League is following with interest and concern what is going on in Syria and regrets the continued acts of violence and murder.” BM
