CAIRO: Egypt's ruling military delivered an air show celebrating the October 6 war, which has put flights out of Cairo International Airport on hold Wednesday. The celebrations have cost the Egyptian government 13 million Egyptian pounds and a number of people have criticized the money spent as Egypt finds itself in an economic downturn. The air show started on Monday and will last until Wednesday saw several F16 planes flying relatively low in the Cairo sky during the day, making formation in celebration of the Egyptian “victory” in the 1973 war against Israel that drove the Israeli army to leave the Sinai peninsula. Most airplanes have been delayed between an hour and two hours, but the schedule is expected to go be back to normal by the evening. The Egyptian army plans to further celebrate the occasion on Thursday with fireworks and more air shows. The day is an official holiday for Egyptians. On Twitter, many Egyptians made sarcastic remarks concerning the celebration, which saw red, white and blue streaks into the sky. “We are not France or America, so why the blue,” said on activist on Twitter. Another questioned why the military couldn't find black smoke to use, “since we have it all over, just get the exhaust of a car.” BM
