CAIRO: Madaneya, a movement to protect the civil state in Egypt, will officially launch on Tuesday. Piloted by human rights lawyer Amir Salem, who helped to found the human rights movement in Egypt in the 1970s, the group is comprised of intellectuals, filmmakers, youth, lawyers, activists, and others. Madaneya's goals include ensuring a civil government in Egypt and defining the roles of the military and the state security. The group will hold a press conference at noon on Tuesday at Rawabet Theater on Hussin el-Meaama Street, off Mahmoud Bassiouny Street, next to the Townhouse Gallery in downtown Cairo. Among the movement's founders are Gameela Ismail, a prominent opposition figure and human rights activist, and Azza Kamel, who runs the non-profit organization ACT, which follows the portrayal of women in Arab media, and is also a women's rights activist. Following the meeting, the group intends to join a planned march in downtown Cairo in solidarity with International Women's Day. BM
