Spanish home delivery startup Glovo shuts down its services in Egypt
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 01 - 05 - 2019

Spanish home delivery startup Glovo is shutting down its services in Egypt, the company confirmed to Ahram Online without providing further details.
Ahram Online has obtained a message received by Glovo partners in Egypt on Monday, which read in Arabic, "We would like to inform you of a decision to halt our operations in Egypt indefinitely on Tuesday 30 April."
"We will send you another message on Tuesday to inform you of further support and to answer any of your inquiries," it added.
The news first surfaced on social media after Glovo's delivery partners received a message and a push notification on their app informing them of the decision. Several users also reported the decision on their social media accounts.
In less than one year of operations in Egypt, Glovo was able to acquire a significant share of the food delivery market, which is dominated by the Egyptian food ordering website Otlob.
Glovo reportedly has some 3,000 active delivery partners in their network in Egypt.
Glovo is a Spanish start-up founded in Barcelona in 2015. It is an on demand service that purchases, picks-up and delivers anything that is ordered through the app. It is one of the most downloaded delivery apps with over 16 million installs.
Its service is currently available in Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Morocco, Kenya, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Turkey, Panama, Romania, Peru, Egypt, Georgia, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Ukraine.
Reports have also suggested that Glovo is exiting the Chilean market on 30 April.
