For the first time, Lloyd's List has included Suez Canal Authority Chairman Osama Rabie in its annual One Hundred People ranking, the definitive guide to the most influential figures shaping the maritime industry. Placing him 75th on the list, Lloyd's recognition highlights Rabie's efforts to launch an intensive promotional campaign aimed at attracting shipping lines back to the Red Sea route and restoring confidence in one of the world's most vital trade arteries. This year's Lloyd's List ranking features senior executives and decision-makers from leading maritime institutions worldwide, reflecting their roles in shaping the shipping industry. In its introduction to the analysis behind Rabie's selection, Lloyd's said: "Chairman and his team are mounting a charm offensive to lure shipping back through the Red Sea, as Egypt battles a steep revenue decline and seeks to restore confidence in one of the world's most vital trade arteries." "After more than two years of disruption from Houthi attacks, tentative signs of a Red Sea return are emerging." Lloyd's added. The canal's authority has introduced a 15 per cent rebate for container vessels with a Suez Canal net tonnage of 130,000 or more—roughly equivalent to ships carrying over 10,000 TEUs—valid until 31 Dec. It has also called marine insurers to lower premiums for Red Sea voyages, easing the financial burden on shipowners. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English Download
