CMA CGM, one of the world's largest shipping groups, is moving to restore its transit through the Suez Canal following improvements in security across the Red Sea, an executive confirmed on Wednesday. During a virtual meeting with Suez Canal Authority Chairman Osama Rabie, Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice President of Assets and Operations at CMA CGM, expressed optimism about the recent positive developments in the region. She stated that the company would incorporate these changes into its planning as it reassesses maritime routes and schedules, ensuring both the safety of vessels and crew. The Suez Canal is the shortest and most efficient route for global shipping, and CMA CGM is keen to return to it, Woehrel said in a statement by the Suez Canal Authority on Wednesday. She emphasised that the alternative route around the Cape of Good Hope remains significantly longer. CMA CGM currently operates a regular service through the canal, and Cabo revealed that the group is also looking to add another service in the coming months. The company's move to reinstate full operations through the Suez Canal signals a renewed confidence in regional stability, which has long been a key factor in the canal's strategic importance for global trade. The Suez Canal, a vital artery for international commerce, had faced disruptions due to regional security concerns. However, recent efforts towards peace in Yemen and improving conditions in the Red Sea are expected to pave the way for smoother shipping operations. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English
