Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke by phone Wednesday, just days after Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed a cooperation agreement in Cairo following months of Egyptian mediation, the presidency said. Pezeshkian thanked Sisi for what he called his "personal sponsorship" of the talks that led to the Sept. 9 agreement restoring cooperation between Tehran and the IAEA. Sisi congratulated Pezeshkian on the signing and underscored Egypt's commitment to reducing regional tensions, urging all stakeholders in the nuclear file to engage in serious dialogue and resume negotiations to reach a peaceful settlement that protects regional security. The leaders also discussed the tensions in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and rejecting any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians. Both reiterated support for a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. The statement said the call also touched on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in multiple sectors in a way that benefits both nations and promotes regional stability.
