Egypt and China's AVIC International are stepping up cooperation on the country's Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, with plans to complete two new stations in the New Administrative Capital by March 2026, Egyptian industry and transport minister said Tuesday. Kamel El-Wazir, who also serves as deputy prime minister for industrial development, met in Beijing with Qian Rong, chairman of AVIC INTL Project Engineering Co, at the start of his visit to China. On behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the Egyptian minister is attending events marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. During the meeting, El-Wazir said President El-Sisi had instructed officials to accelerate the opening of the Cathedral of the Nativity and Strategic Command stations under Phase 3 of the LRT, which links Cairo to the new capital. He urged AVIC to fast-track equipment shipments and installations, noting that Egyptian contractors are expected to finish civil works by the end of the year. Rong said shipments of electromechanical systems from China would begin this month, with installations starting immediately to meet the March 2026 deadline. Talks also covered Phase 4 of the project, extending the LRT to the industrial hub of 10th of Ramadan City. El-Wazir said the government would fund civil works in local currency, with national contractors set to take over sites next week to begin groundwork and infrastructure. The two sides also discussed a potential fifth phase linking Rehab to the Administrative Capital and its airport. The planned extension would run from Rehab Interchange Station — connected to Cairo Metro Line 4 — eastward to the Capital Airport Station. El-Wazir and Qian are scheduled to inspect Phase 3 works during the TransMEA 2025 transport and industry exhibition, which opens in Cairo on Nov. 9. The LRT, inaugurated by El-Sisi in its first two phases, is one of Egypt's largest transport projects and a centerpiece of the country's partnership with China in infrastructure development.
