Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad met with British Ambassador to Egypt Gareth Bayley on Tuesday to explore potential avenues for collaboration in advancing green transition efforts across various sectors. Minister Fouad emphasised that cooperation with the UK on green growth would be pivotal in supporting Egypt's commitment to its nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. This comes after Egypt submitted its first transparency report to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in December 2023. She noted that joint efforts could be particularly beneficial in the development of Egypt's upcoming updated NDC plan, with a focus on capacity-building for government agencies and key sectors. Specific areas of collaboration include the establishment of climate change units and enhancing monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems. The minister also highlighted opportunities for joint initiatives in raising public awareness about climate change and securing investments in green transition projects. Ambassador Bayley expressed the UK's desire for Egypt to join the Green Energy Coalition under the Green Growth Campaign, reinforcing Britain's support for Egypt's climate goals. He also reiterated the UK's commitment to backing Egypt's NDC implementation through the £500 million Blue Planet Fund, which finances projects aimed at protecting local communities and preserving nature. The two officials also discussed potential cooperation on the conservation of the Red Sea's natural resources, with Ambassador Bayley describing it as a global treasure of marine biodiversity and coral reefs.
