Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met with Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad to discuss strengthening cooperation on environmental and renewable energy issues, particularly wind energy, as per a Cabinet statement. The meeting focused on expanding wind power plants in the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez regions while ensuring compliance with international bird conservation guidelines. The discussion highlighted the alignment of electricity transmission routes and renewable energy projects in the Gulf of Suez with the protection of migratory bird paths, a key global migration route. Both ministers emphasised the importance of balancing energy development with environmental preservation, reaffirming Egypt's commitment to biodiversity protection. Esmat stressed the ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Environment in the framework of Egypt's National Energy Strategy, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix and reduce carbon emissions. He also outlined plans to make Egypt a regional energy hub connecting Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, supported by strategic infrastructure projects and cross-border electrical interconnection with neighbouring countries such as Sudan, Libya, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Minister Fouad highlighted the importance of ensuring that electricity transmission lines and renewable energy projects in the Gulf of Suez align with bird migration paths. Minister Fouad stressed the need for joint efforts with relevant authorities to ensure that future projects adhere to environmental standards. Fouad also mentioned potential amendments to the previously signed protocol to enhance governance and transparency in the sector. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English Subediting: M. S. Salama
