Egypt has provided an additional 300 Egyptian pounds to each of the 4.7 million families enrolled in the Takaful and Karama social protection programme during the holy month of Ramadan, a move aimed to alleviate financial burdens for vulnerable households. This one-time disbursement, totaling 1.5 billion pounds, was funded by the State Treasury, as announced in a joint statement by Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk and Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy on Saturday. This Ramadan support aligns with presidential directives aimed at directly improving the living standards of low-income families. Building on this immediate relief, the ministers also announced a significant 25 per cent increase in regular Takaful and Karama cash support, effective April 2025. This expansion is projected to cost 13 billion pounds through June 2026, further demonstrating the government's commitment to strengthening its social safety net. The Takaful and Karama Programme, launched in 2014, has seen substantial growth. Initially supporting 1.7 million families with 3.5 billion pounds, the programme has expanded significantly in response to presidential directives to address the needs of vulnerable households. Recognised as a leading social protection initiative in the Arab world, Takaful and Karama is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary in May 2025. The Ministry of Social Solidarity is planning a special event to highlight the program's positive impact on millions of Egyptian families. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English Subediting: Y.Yasser
