Egypt, Sudan reaffirm commitment to trilateral GERD negotiations
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 24 - 02 - 2025

Egypt and Sudan have reiterated their commitment to keeping discussions on the disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) within the trilateral framework involving Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia.
Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, and his Sudanese counterpart, Daw Al-Bait Abdel Rahman Mansour, emphasised their rejection of any attempts to involve other Nile Basin countries in the dispute to legitimise the dam, which they consider a violation of international law. They also stressed the importance of maintaining strong relations with other Nile Basin states.
The joint technical body for Nile waters between Egypt and Sudan held an extraordinary meeting on Sunday, 23 February 2025, to discuss the outcomes of the ministerial meeting of the Nile Basin Initiative, which took place on 21–22 February 2025. The meeting aimed to unify positions on issues of mutual interest concerning relations with Nile Basin countries and water-related matters.
The ministers expressed their appreciation for the spirit of cooperation and brotherhood that characterises relations between Egypt and Sudan, particularly through the work of the joint technical body. They underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration between the two nations and continuing efforts to restore consensus within the Nile Basin Initiative, reaffirming it as the sole comprehensive mechanism that brings together all Nile Basin countries.
