Cemex pledges active role at COP 27 in Egypt to combat climate change
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 28 - 03 - 2022

Mexican concrete giant Cemex intends to play an active role at the upcoming United Nations' Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 27) that will take place in Egypt's Sharm El-Sheikh next November.
The company will look at how it helps to tackle global climate change and announce new initiatives at COP 27, said Zeinab Hegazy, communication, public affairs, and sustainability director at Cemex for Egypt and UAE.
At COP 26 that took place in Glasgow, Scotland late 2021, Cemex joined the First Movers Coalition (FMC) as founding members to drive more green demand and low-carbon technologies in this decade, to help advance the world's climate goals. It also submitted its new 2030 target of below 475 Kg CO2 per tonne of cementitious product for validation to the Science-Based Targets initiative as part of its commitment to fulfil its ambition to reduce its carbon footprint by delivering net-zero concrete globally by 2050.
Ahead of COP 26, Cemex had signed the Business Ambition for 1.5°C commitment led by the We Mean Business Coalition in partnership with the Science Based Targets initiative and the U.N. Global Compact. With this commitment, Cemex joined The Race to Zero Campaign of the UNFCCC.
The Race to Zero Campaign was launched to mobilise net-zero commitments from cities, businesses, and investors ahead of the COP 26. All members of the Coalition pledge to reach net-zero emissions by mid-century at the latest, in line with global efforts in limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
These initiatives and alliances align with Cemex's strong commitment to climate action, Hegazy further told reporters at a roundtable in Cairo.
