The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) referred a draft law on the upcoming presidential election to the Supreme Constitutional Court for revision, a source within the government told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Tuesday. According to the draft law, which was discussed in the state-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA) last month, presidential hopefuls must receive the support of 30 members of parliament, or 30,000 potential voters, to become official nominees for president. MENA also said the draft law allows any party in parliament to nominate one of its members in the presidential elections. The court will conclude discussions on the draft in a few days, the source added. The source expected a SCAF decree regarding the law to be announced Sunday, saying that the announcement will precede the first session of parliament, scheduled for 23 January. Amendments to law 174/2005 were endorsed in a cabinet meeting on 4 January and were referred to the ruling army leaders. On 15 December, the SCAF announced it had prepared a draft law to regulate the presidential elections, which are slated to be held before the end of June.
