The cabinet approved a bill on Sunday to remove current senior university administrators. The bill, which amends some of the articles of the University Law, states that senior university positions will become vacant in August. Adminstrations are to remain in position until the Minister of Higher Education announces the new criteria for appointment to top positions, the bill suggests. Dozens of members of the teaching staff on Sunday staged a four-hour protest at several universities across Egypt to call for the removal of senior administrators and the election of new ones in a direct ballot. At Cairo University, professors raised banners to call for the removal of current leaders who belong to the former regime. Protesting professors urged all teaching staff to join their protest, which they said would end with a march to Tahrir on Friday 8 July. Hany al-Husseiny, a professor participating in the sit-in, said the protest would continue until the end of the week. He added that professors from Cairo, Ain Shams, Helwan, Suez Canal, Fayoum, Beni Suef , Mansoura, and Kafr al-Sheikh are taking part in the protest. The remaining universities will join the protest on 16 July, he said, adding that if their demands are not satisfied they will stage a protest in front of the cabinet on 17 July.
