The Egyptian Finance Ministry on Tuesday gave in to the demands of truck drivers--on strike since Friday--by reversing an earlier decision to increase taxes on truck freight. Land transport associations, however, have decided to maintain the nationwide strike--except for the transport of "strategic" commodities--until the rest of their demands are met. In the interim, the government has employed public-sector means of transporting wheat with the use of trailers and railroads--even river barges--in order to make up for the transport shortfall caused by the strike.
