Egyptian recipients of advanced academic degrees rose by six percent in 2009 compared to the previous year, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics has announced. The total number of advanced degrees Egyptians obtained from both foreign universities and institutions in Egypt in 2009 reached 47,240. Cairo University topped the list, having awarded 11.1 percent of the total number of degrees, followed by Ain Shams University at 10.9 percent and Alexandria University at 10.1 percent. Diplomas constitute slightly more than 70 percent of the total, followed by master's degrees at 19 percent and PhDs with 9.5 percent. Almost three quarters of the degrees awarded were in the humanities field, followed by medical degrees with 14.8 percent, basic sciences with 5.5 percent, engineering sciences with 4.2 percent, and finally agricultural sciences with 2.6 percent. Egyptians received 174 degrees in 2009 from foreign universities. England awarded the greatest share with 29.3 percent, followed by Japan with 18.4 percent and the US with 14.9 percent.
