Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs Abdel Rahman Salah Eddin told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the Foreign Ministry yesterday summoned the Syrian Ambassador in Cairo Youssef Ahmed to denounce the ‘vulgar' demonstrations that were held before the Egyptian embassy in Damascus a few days ago. In a related context, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said in response to a question on the media war between Cairo and Damascus: “This is not good for anyone. Arab efforts must work on abolishing such problems that jeopardize the Palestinian cause. We must end any tension in relations, and stand united to face problems.”
The demonstrations criticized the Egyptian position on the situation in the Gaza Strip, chanting slogans against the Egyptian regime and accusing it of being an agent of the West. An Egyptian source told Al-Masry Al-Youm: “The recent behavior posed question marks about Syria's keenness on keeping relations with Egypt calm. We detect a new escalation on the part of Syria.”
