Consultancy Contract with Australian WorleyParsons Mid-Month; No Return to US Bechtel
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 05 - 06 - 2009

"Australia's WorleyParsons will sign a consultancy contract mid June instantly with the Egyptian Stations Authority for the construction of Egypt's first-ever nuclear power plant," the Ministry of Electricity and Energy said.
The ministry's undersecretary Aktham Abul Ela said that "the contract is being drafted and reviewed after negotiations between the two parties ended successfully."

He denied reports that a contract would be signed with Bechtel Corporation, which was previously excluded. The company that will carry out the project is selected according to certain rules and laws.
Negotiations with the Australian company ended successfully and we will sign contracts. Even if a contract was not signed with the Australian company, we would have signed a contract with the next company in the order of the seven companies who made offers.

The seven companies' offers have been legally analyzed and there were no complaints made about the tender's details or offers.  The ministry sought the help of Egyptian and international experts to analyze the offers.

The Ministry of Electricity and Energy has selected WorleyParsons after disagreements between Bechtel and the Egyptian Nuclear Stations Authority over the contract's terms.
On the other hand, Cairo will this week host a conference and two regional meetings on nuclear plants on the African continent. The conference will discuss the African nuclear programs and increasing awareness of requirements and challenges of the feasibility of nuclear energy. The two meetings will discuss strengthening the planning capacity for developing sustainable energy in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
