A bus crashed Tuesday, after colliding with two vehicles on 26th of July Corridor Bridge near Kerdasa district, Giza governorate, leaving nine passengers injured, according to police investigations. The investigations revealed that the bus belongs to the Public Transport Authority and that it was heading from Ahmed Helmy station in Ramses district, downtown Cairo, to Sheikh Zayed City. The bus was attempting to avoid collision with both vehicles, but, the steering wheel slipped from under the driver's hands, causing the bus to crash into the barriers of the corridor bridge, leaving the bus stuck on the top of the bridge barriers, according to the ongoing investigations. Civil defense units removed the damage caused by the accident. The injured were rushed to Sheikh Zayed and Imbaba public hospitals to receive medical treatment. A World Bank report on Cairo traffic congestion said at least 1،000 people die each year in traffic related accidents، more than half of them are pedestrians, and over 4،000 injuries. These rates are far higher than those recorded in most other major cities of the world. However, World Health Organization put the yearly deaths due to road traffic crashes at about 12،000. Egypt has a road traffic fatality rate of 42 deaths per 100،000 population. The majority (48%) of those killed are passengers of four-wheelers though pedestrians also constitute a significant proportion (20%) of these fatalities.
