The future of the Syrian government could be discussed when terror threat in the country is eliminated, which should be done by the incumbent authorities with the help of international community, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said. He added that the international community should be supporting and helping the Syrian government in its fight against terrorism. On Wednesday, Syrian President Bashar Assad said Iran supported Syria and the Syrian people politically, economically and militarily. Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011 as the Syrian government forces have been fighting opposition factions and Islamic extremist groups, including Islamic State and the Nusra Front. Since the beginning of the war, the United States and some of its allies have supported the moderate Syrian opposition and called for Assad's resignation, while Russia and Iran recognized Assad as the legitimate Syrian authority.
