Intifada: year one
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 27 - 09 - 2001

STILL HOLDING ON: Memory made manifest, keys to old family homes in occupied Palestine are passed down from one generation to the next; but to call them symbols would be to strip them of their essential attribute, which is their ability to open doors closed decades ago, doors to houses perhaps demolished, but whose inhabitants, in a sense, live in them still. Memory is a burden, too -- all the more so when its wounds are carved open anew every day by continued absence. That is why the reminiscences of their grandparents, to Palestinian children, continue to constitute the present -- even as they shape that present, today, into a future they cannot discern clearly. That, too, is why we honour the Intifada, as a moment of irrepressible life, leaping forth to bare its teeth at death in a grin, a snarl or a cry of hope
