Supposedly safe Sherif Sonbol captured this ironic shot of a poor bicycle owner who tried to protect his vehicle from theft by tying it to a lamppost. To commemorate the birthdays of Mahatma Gandhi, the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture has been conducting this painting competition for Egyptian children every year. Durai, together with the Indian ambassador and Fadila launched a catalogue carrying all the winning paintings of the children. A large audience flocked to the concert to enjoy the melodies of Hilal and Abdel-Nour. The latter dazzled her fans with a glittery yellow dress while the concert was televised. � Tiba Language Schools held a grand celebration for orphaned and sick children enlivened by pop singer Ihab Tawfiq and actresses Menna Fedali, Dina Fouad and Amira Fathi. All enjoyed the event, singing, dancing and distributing gifts among the children. � To commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore on 7 May, a function will be organised at the premises of the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) at 23, Talaat Harb Street, Downtown, Cairo tomorrow at 7pm. The programme will include recitation of Tagore 's poems and dance performances. Tagore (1861-1941) was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. He was a master of several literary forms -- he was a poet, novelist, short-story writer and a playwright. His contributions reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th century. He is perhaps the world's only writer to have composed the national anthems of two countries: India and Bangladesh. In the evening of his life, he also took to painting. Tagore was also an educationist, a national leader and a peripatetic internationalist who visited many countries including Egypt. � As part of the Culture Resource Centre Spring Festival 2010 that was launched last week, a thrilling concert took place Saturday at the historically ravishing Sama Khana in Al-Sioufiya Street, Al-Helmia Al-Gadida. It featured Czech violinist Iva Bittova and Iraqi oud player Anwar Abudragh who both mesmerised the audience with brilliant performances.
