Agassi steps in
ANDRE Agassi says he wants to buy Bjorn Borg's Wimbledon trophies when the five-time champion puts them up for sale at auction.
The 49-year-old Swede has financial problems and is selling the trophies and two rackets, including the one he used when he beat John McEnroe in 1980. "The only way you should have one is if you win it, not buy one," Agassi said.
"The thought of a Wimbledon trophy being in the hands of somebody with a lot of money is upsetting."
Borg won Wimbledon five times between 1976 and 1980, as well as winning six other Grand Slam titles before retiring at the age of 26.
Auctioneers Bonhams say the special nature of the items offered for sale made it hard to estimate a price, but that they could bring in up to 200,000.
Former Wimbledon champion Jimmy Connors has suggested that the All-England Club should buy the trophies back from Borg, allowing him the chance to buy them back in the future, and Agassi agreed that Wimbledon should help Borg out.
"I think there's a lot of people who could step up to help for sure -- Wimbledon being one and myself another," he said.
"I think it would be amazing for the fans of tennis to be able to see them," he said.
"But first things first. I'd like to see the sport come together to figure out a way to make sure they don't get into the wrong hands."
Seven for Mutola
MOZAMBIQUE'S Maria Mutola won the 800m at the World Indoor Championships in Moscow, her seventh title.
Mutola, 33, won in a time of one minute 58.90 seconds, while Jamaica's Kenia Sinclair snatched silver and Morocco's Hasna Benhassi took bronze.
Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele took the 3,000m crown to become the first man to win world titles on three surfaces.
And Germany's Andre Niklaus won the final two events of the men's heptathlon to pip Bryan Clay to gold.
Bekele, the world and Olympic 10,000m champion, pulled away with one and a half laps to go to win in seven minutes 39.32 seconds. He now holds world titles indoors, outdoors and over cross-country.
Double world steeplechase champion Saif Said Shaheen of Qatar used his superb finishing speed to overtake Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge for silver on the final lap.
Russia scooped five gold medals and topped the final medals table with eight golds, matching their previous best showing.
Yuliya Chizhenko won the 1500m ahead of compatriot Yelena Soboleva, with Bahrain's Maryam Yusuf Jamal in third.
Olesya Krasnomovets won the women's 400m in a championship record of 50.04 and then helped Russia to another gold in the 4x400m relay.
Tatyana Kotova won her third world indoor title in the long jump and high jumper Yelena Slesarenko was the hosts' other Sunday medal-winner.
Elsewhere, Grenada's Alleyne Francique retained his 400m crown, winning in 45.54 from Botswana's California Molefe.
The US won the men's 4x400m relay after 2004 champions Jamaica crashed out of the heats.
Russia's hot favourite Yuri Borzakovsky was beaten into third in the men's 800m by Kenya's Wilfred Bungei and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi.
Wales' Jimmy Watkins finished last, running out of steam having run two lifetime bests in the qualifying rounds.
Walter Davis won the triple jump title for the United States with a leap of 17.73m, while Britain's Nathan Douglas was third.
Douglas, third in last year's world triple jump rankings, had considered pulling out of the event after an indifferent season and ankle surgery.
"It was a gamble coming here and the gamble paid off for me," said Douglas, who set a personal best of 17.05m. "I've got to be pleased with a PB off half a winter's training."
In the men's 400m, Alleyne Francique of Grenada took gold in a time of 45.54 seconds.
Natalya Khoroneko of Belarus won the women's shot put with a throw of 19.84m, while America's Brad Walker won pole vault gold.
The US finished second in the medals table with seven golds, well clear of Ethiopia and Ukraine, who both won two.
Johnstone dies
CELTIC legend Jimmy Johnstone has died at the age of 61 after a long battle with motor neurone disease.
Johnstone was a member of Celtic's Lisbon Lions team, who became the first British side to win the European Cup when they beat Inter Milan in 1967.
Johnstone scored over 100 goals for Celtic, won 23 caps for Scotland and in 2002 was voted Celtic's greatest player by supporters of the club.
He was diagnosed with the motor neurone condition in November 2001.
His son James Johnstone, 35, said: "My dad passed away at 6am this morning. It hasn't even begun to sink in yet for the family."
Winning start
RENAULT'S Fernando Alonso started the defence of his world championship in style by fending off Michael Schumacher to win the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Schumacher led from the start as Alonso rose from fourth on the grid to second, and the Renault closed on to the tail of the Ferrari after their first stops.
Alonso took a narrow lead after a later final stop and held on to the end.
McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen was third after starting from the back of the grid, ahead of Honda's Jenson Button.
Raikkonen's progress was particularly impressive.
Following his suspension failure in qualifying, McLaren gave him enough fuel to do only one pit stop compared to everyone else's two, and Raikkonen responded magnificently.
He moved up to 11th on the first lap, and was ninth before the pit-stop period started.
Raikkonen moved into the points as others pitted in front of him and took the final podium position as the other leading cars made their final stops.
He comfortably held off a challenge from Button during the closing laps.
The race suggested that there will be a four- way battle for supremacy in 2006, with Renault, Ferrari, Honda and McLaren all potential winners.
