Part of D-CAF's 6th edition, CAMOCA (Cairo Museum of Contemporary Art) is a transnational curatorial project that reflects on the history of contemporary art in Cairo. CAMOCA adopts specific artistic strategies that have been inspired by projects and exhibitions by artists, pedagogues, film makers, curators, academics and thinkers who have worked in the region over the past years, including Adelita Husni-Bey, Manuel Pelmus, Noor Afshan Mirza and Brad Butler, Reem Fadda, Clare Davies and Anton Vidokle. In their trans-disciplinary work these artists and thinkers challenge exhibition formats, categories and protocols of museums. CAMOCA poses questions about an imaginary contemporary art museum in Cairo – what would it host, where would it be, who would visit it? It proposes to discuss the renewed interest in museums with artists and curators who are engaged in building museums through art projects, exhibitions and books, across cultures, disciplines and media, considering that the act of building museums is also a critical, performative act (23 March-12 April).
