EGYPTIAN athletes triumphed at the recent modern pentathlon biathle and traithle World Championships in Sarasota, Florida. They won 36 medals in both disciplines: 14 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze in several age categories. A total of 400 male and female athletes representing 29 countries took part in the three-day event: Georgia, the UAE, South Africa, Russia, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Armenia, Belarus, England, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Namibia, Kenya, India, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, France, Ukraine, Egypt and the US. Egypt had 33 male and female athletes aged eight to 21. The delegation was headed by Sherif Al-Erian, president of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation who was keen to join the delegation to give the young athletes a confidence boost. “We are giving the youngsters the chance to participate in a world championship against other countries in order to gain more experience,” Al-Erian said.
