HOST Egypt trounced Algeria 92-43 at the start of the 2016 Africa Under-18 women's championship being played in the indoor halls of Cairo Stadium. The championship is held under the FIBA, the International Basketball Federation. The home side got off to a quick start and led 30-9 at the end of the first quarter. Egypt extended their advantage by pouring in 21 points making the most of turnovers by Algeria for a 52-12 lead at halftime. Radwa Sherif had a pivotal role, leading all scorers with 21 points and 13 rebounds in their winning cause. Four of Sherif's teammates -- Meral Abdel-Gawad, Rana Abdel-Fattah, Nadine Rehan and Mariam Khalaf -- finished with double digits. Algeria's Soulef Malkia poured in 14 points but that was not nearly enough. The encouraging start filled Egypt, who are chasing their second continental crown in this age category, with more confidence while taking on debutant Madagascar in their second game, beating them easily 78-49. Egypt were scheduled to meet the always competitive Angola.
