Basketball: Egypt lose to Angola in Africa Championship final Egypt, who had already qualified for the World Cup, fail to win the FIBA Africa Championship after losing to Angola on Saturday
Egypt failed to win the FIBA Africa Championship after suffering a 57-40 defeat by record winners Angola in the tournament's final in the Ivory Coast on Saturday. However, Egypt had already achieved their primary objective of reaching next year's World Cup in Spain after ensuring they would be one of Africa's three representatives in the tournament. Egypt's 21-year-old Assem Marie was named as the Africa Championship's best player after a string of impressive displays. The Pharaohs made a poor start to the Africa Championship that saw them lose to hosts Ivory Coast, Senegal and Algeria in their three group-stage games. However, they remarkably recovered from the disappointing start to record a surprising victory over title holders Tunisia before beating Cape Verde in an exciting last-eight game. They also defeated Senegal in the semi-final to secure a World Cup place for the first time since 1994. Egypt were the dominant force in Africa in the 1960s and 70s but suffered a dip in form in the subsequent decades. They finished 11th at the previous edition of the Africa Championship in Madagascar in 2011.
