Soccer on the side - Woeful homecoming
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 04 - 02 - 2014

Egyptian player Mohamed Nagy Gedo has for the second time failed to impress at the English club, Hull City. Gedo moved to the Tigers at the beginning of the season carrying the injury he suffered last season. His hopes for a quick recovery and a chance at the top flight of English football were crushed due to an ill-fated turn of events.
The Egyptian forward took more time than expected to recover from his surgery and couldn't really impress Hull City Coach Steve Bruce when he saw action with the reserves. Gedo's failure to make any impact in the English Premier League was particularly disappointing, as the prolific striker had previously shown his mettle when he popped up with some extremely important goals that helped Hull seal a place in the top division. Bruce had made a move for him once again even though he knew the player was injured and needed some time to return to playing shape.
However, Gedo managed a total of a mere 97 minutes of action — all of them coming off the bench — this season with Hull as he played just three times. Even though Bruce indicated that he would nevertheless like to keep Gedo till the end of the season, the player wanted to leave as he felt his chances narrowing after the signing of Nikica Jelavic from Everton and Shane Long from West Brom. Gedo is now back to parent Egyptian club Ahli, but his fans will still presumably be hoping to see him play abroad once again.
On another note, Chelsea's new star, Egypt's Mohamed Salah, is ready to make his debut this week against Man City after the completion of the paperwork. He was denied making his debut in the goalless draw against West Ham several days ago. Salah looked very sharp and fired up in training according to his new teammates and manager Jose Mourinho, whose first words to the media regarding the signing of Salah was that, finally, Chelsea fans can be sure Salah will never score against them ever again.
Positive reactions emanated from top players around the world, with Evergreen full back Branislav Ivanovic saying that Salah reminded him of Dutch mega star Arjen Robben, and Brazilian star Ramires saying that Salah is showing immense quality so far in training and that he seems more than ready to help them secure any silverware this season. In his first interview with Chelsea's official website, Salah said that he wants to help the club win the Champions League again and that it's a personal dream for him to lift the trophy that he considers the most important and most prestigious of all.
Regrettably, Salah is not allowed to play with Chelsea in the Champions League this season after already playing with Basel in the group stages. Salah added that he would do his best to ensure the club can win the Premier League title from under the noses of Arsenal and Man City.
Still in the Premier League, the ever-present Mohamady once again started for Hull City as they drew 1-1 against Tottenham at home to end their four-games losing streak in the league. Mohamady played for 70 minutes in a very good game against the tireless Danny Rose and was taken off for Robert Koren as Bruce tried to snatch all three points, but the game ended in a draw that at least stopped the losing trot for the Tigers. Hull City are now in 13th place with just two points above the relegation zone, which means they have to start winning games once again to avoid the entanglement of relegation places.
