Mubarak 'presidential palaces' embezzlement case to resume Four new defendants accused of facilitating Mubarak and his sons' alleged seizure of public funds also stand trial on Wednesday
The 'presidential palaces' trial of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak is set to resume Wednesday after the criminal court added four new defendants to the case, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported. Mubarak, his sons Gamal and Alaa, and the four new defendants are accused of embezzling LE125 million ($17.9 million) allocated for the renovation of presidential palaces. In the first session of the trial last August, the court referred the case back to the general prosecution to add four new defendants. The latter held managerial positions in the renovation project, and are accused of facilitating Mubarak and his sons' seizure of public funds. Mubarak and his two sons – who both face a separate corruption case – also face trials for the killing of protesters during the January 2011 uprising. Hosni Mubarak was released from custody in August after exceeding the two-year legally mandated detention time pending trial, but Gamal and Alaa remain in jail.
