FIFA says Zamalek board 'must be re-installed' The world governing body rejects all government interference in football affairs and orders the reinstatement of clubs' boards who have been recently removed
FIFA has called for the reinstatement of all Egyptian football club boards that were deposed by ministry officials, reiterating its stance that Egypt's government must not interfere with the country's internal football affairs. In a letter dated 12 February and published on the Egyptian Football Association's (EFA) website on Thursday, the world governing body asked EFA to provide a copy of its correspondence with Egypt's sports ministry calling on the government to "immediately cease any interference in football affairs and all clubs affiliated to the EFA general assembly." FIFA's letter also said that Ahly, Zamalek, Smouha, Ittihad of Alexandria, Tersana and Zohour will organise general assemblies to elect new boards "without interference from the authorities." The letter stipulated, however, that the elections must not take place before the revision process is completed regarding the country's sports law, established during a meeting hosted by the International Olympic Committe (ICO) on 26 November. Until then, the clubs whose boards have been disbanded must reinstall their former ones, FIFA specified. Egypt's sports minister Taher Abou-Zeid has been criticised for meddling with various club boards. He removed Zamalek's board and appointed a new panel under the presidency of Kamal Darwich until a new election could be conducted. He then tried again with Ahly's board, but interim Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi froze the decision and said that it would be revised. In recent years the EFA has been under strict supervision from FIFA and the IOC because of government interference. A new law regulating sports in Egypt is being created to replace the current regulation, which has been in place since 1975. Several meetings have been held between Egyptian officials – including the sports ministry, EFA and the country's Olympic Committee representatives – and FIFA and IOC members to revise the draft law and ensure its compliance with international regulations. Egypt has been granted a six-month deadline to issue the regulations and get them in line with the IOC and FIFA charts.
