FIFA criticises Egyptian FA over 'absence of answers' A FIFA delegation set to fly to Egypt to 'assess situation' following complaints over alleged government interference in football
FIFA rebuked the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) on Wednesday for failing to provide answers over inquiries related to allegations of government interference in football. Several leading clubs, including Cairo giants Ahly and Zamalek, wanted looming elections to be postponed until a new sports law is issued, saying they wanted to adhere to the statutes of FIFA and the International Olympic Committee. However, the sports ministry insisted to hold club elections as scheduled, igniting a row with the likes of Ahly and Zamalek who complained of what they deemed government interference in football. The EFA did not take sides, appearing reluctant to provide concrete answers over the repeated inquiries of FIFA. "The FIFA Associations Committee showed deep concern about the fact that the Egyptian Football Association did not implement the statutes and did not react to the interference from the authorities and to different correspondences sent by FIFA in this regard," read a letter sent by the world governing body to the EFA. "The Committee deemed that the absence of answers and/or the very late replies should not be tolerated anymore and it is therefore anticipated that EFA will show due diligence in the future." The elections are due to be held at the end of March. It is not clear yet whether the new sports law would be issued before the elections. Controversial lawyer Mortada Mansour, interim chairman Kamal Darwish and former club vice-president Raouf Gaser will run for president of Zamalek, one of Egypt and Africa's most successful clubs. Businessmen Ibrahim Al-Moalem and Mahmoud Taher will run for president of Ahly, Egypt and Africa's most successful club which is constantly praised for having a quasi-professional system, unlike the majority of its peers FIFA said a delegation will arrive in Egypt soon to discuss the ongoing feud. "Finally, the Committee mandated the FIFA administration to organize a mission to assess the situation, meet the main stakeholders and report to FIFA and CAF," the letter added. "We will contact you soon in order to set the dates of the mission."
