Egyptian FA 'not obliged' to delay club elections despite FIFA warning The Egyptian Football Association says it was not obliged to cancel looming club elections despite a warning from FIFA
The Egyptian FA said it would delay its response to a FIFA warning to allow for 'further consultations' with the sports ministry amid reports that Egypt might be suspended for alleged government interference in football. FIFA has repeatedly demanded that the EFA postpone looming club elections until a new sports law is issued. In its latest letter dated 26 February, the world governing body warned the EFA over any government interference in football affairs. "We understand that the EFA has taken some initiatives towards the sports ministry, but it seems that, according to letters from the club management, the interference has not ceased and that clubs are obliged to implement measures against their will, notably the holding of elections," read the letter. "We remind you of the obligation of all FIFA member associations to manage their affairs independently and without influence from a third party. "We ask you to contact once more the relevant authorities in order to make them aware of FIFA's opinion and to provide us with a report no later than 10 March 2014." According to Ahram's daily newspaper, EFA vice-president Hassan Farid said the association is not obliged to adhere to FIFA's warning. "The EFA will make its response following its board meeting on 9 March. It will take its time to consult with the sports ministry," he said. Ahly, Egypt's most successful club, are incensed at attempts by the sports ministry to dismiss the club's board and appoint an interim administration until the elections, scheduled for this month. Zamalek, Ahly's Cairo rivals, had their board sacked by the ministry. Former chairman Mamdouh Abbas should return to his post if the EFA postpones the elections.
