Art Alert: Sobhy Guirguis retrospective opens 4 Feb at ArtTalks
ArtTalks gallery hosts a retrospective show commemorating the first death anniversary of exceptional Egyptian painter and sculptor Sobhy Guirguis from 4 to 25 February
Published in Ahram Online on 30 - 01 - 2014

Opening 4 February at ArtTalks gallery, a retrospective exhibition titled The Self and The Other will feature over 60 of Sobhy Guirguis' paintings and sculptures. Spanning his 60-year art career, the exhibition marks the artist's first death anniversary.
Born in 1929, Sobhy Guirguis graduated from the faculty of fine arts in Cairo, before pursuing further studies in Florence, Italy in the 1960s.
At the forefront of the avant-garde movement of Egyptian sculptors, Guirguis' skilled and distinctive style allowed him to experiment with scale to defy the conventions of figurative sculpture, setting him apart as a bold, rebellious innovator.
With his often figurative pieces composed of abstract geometric shapes, the artist creates an unusual world, endowing his creatures with unusual features and forms.
"Living and building a world of his own, Guirguis succeeds in mixing innocence and freedom in a semi-minimalist way – whereby the child inside the man overwhelms his character and consequently his works," host gallery ArtTalks comments on Guirguis work.
Programme:
The exhibition opens on Tuesday 4 February and runs until 25 February.
8 Al-Kamel Mohamed Street, Zamalek
Opening hours: 10am-3pm daily except Friday
