Elmohamady prefers winger role at Hull City
Egypt's Ahmed Elmohamady prefers attacking over defensive roles, but accepts his coach's decision either way
Published in Ahram Online on 08 - 01 - 2014

Hull City wide man Ahmed Elmohamady prefers to play as a winger rather than a full-back, the Egypt international told FIFA.com.
Elmohamady, who joined Hull on a permanent basis this season after helping them seal a promotion during a one-year loan stint last season, has been a regular for manager Steve Bruce since the start of the English Premier League campaign.
Having been deployed as a full-back for a few games at the beginning of the season, Elmohamady was only able to pose threat after advancing to the wing —a tactical change that saw him advance to score goals.
"The best thing for me is to play in an advanced position because it gives me more freedom to carry out my attacking duties," Elmohamady, 26, told FIFA.com.
"But when the coach asks me to play in a certain position, I have to accept that.
“We were playing last year with a 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 formation, where I used to play as a right-back.
"This strategy was pretty much similar to the way we used to play with the Egyptian national team under Hassan Shehata, and I'm very familiar with that position.
“It's somewhat different this year. Sometimes we play with four defenders at the back, and sometimes we play with three. When we are playing with four, sometimes I play as a full-back and sometimes I play as a right-sided midfielder."
On Egypt's World Cup exit
Speaking about Egypt's World Cup qualification failure following a thumping 7-3 playoff aggregate defeat to Ghana, the ex-ENPPI full-back said he "fully disagreed" with then-manager Bob Bradley's decision to rule him out of the return leg.
“We had a very good run in the qualifiers, but just one game caused all that. It was an off-day. I respect the view of the coach (Bob Bradley) to leave me out of the second leg, but I fully disagreed with him,” Elmohamady said.
“He excluded the only player who plays every week in a very strong competition like the Premier League ... but anyway, this is past now. We are looking forward to a new spell under coach Shawky Gharib, whom I know very well."
