Egypt's state TV wins domestic league broadcasting rights for LE70 million The Egyptian TV strikes a deal with Premier League clubs to broadcast the competition for LE70 million next season
Egypt's state television has won the rights to broadcast the country's Premier League matches next season, a committee that comprises most Egyptian clubs announced on Tuesday. In a brief statement on the Egyptian Football Association's website, the Premier League clubs said Egypt's state television has purchased the broadcasting rights for LE70 million. "The Egyptian TV will be the sole party responsible for selling the rights to satellite channels," EFA spokesman Azmy Megahed told Ahram Online. However, Cairo giants Ahly did not give the thumps up to the deal, having withdrawn from the committee after a dispute with fellow Premier League clubs. Ahly said they would instead sell their rights individually but it remains to be seen whether they will be allowed to do so, given the vague regulations governing the matter. "The Egyptian TV will exclusively broadcast the matches as the information ministry aims to lift any burdens off the Egyptian people, who should watch the matches without any pay-per-view subscriptions," Information Minister Dorreya Sharaf El-Din was quoted as saying by Ahram's Arabic news website. Egyptian television channels suffered dearly because of the cancellation of two successive Premier Leagues due to the country's political turmoil. Most of them were shut down after incurring huge losses. The new season is scheduled to start on 24 December.
