Mubarak arrives late for retrial hearing Ousted president Mubarak arrives hours late for his first retrial session since his release from jail pending further investigation
Ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak arrived hours late for Saturday's hearing in his ongoing retrial. Mubarak, as well as his two sons Gamal and Alaa and interior minister Habib El-Adly, are currently facing retrial for charges of complicity in the killing of over 800 protesters during the January 2011 uprising. This marks first trial session to be held since the 85-year-old ousted president was released from prison pending investigation in August. The retrial comes after the ousted president's appeal on an earlier life sentence was accepted by the court. In August, a Cairo appeals court accepted an appeal by the former president against a continued detention order he had received, which allowed Mubarak's release from jail. Following the order, interim Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi placed him under house arrest at a Maadi military hospital based on the powers granted to the PM according to the then-recently implemented emergency law. In Saturday's session, the court is scheduled to hear the testimony of Mubarak's former prime minister, Ahmed Nazif. Mubarak and El-Adly both received life sentences in June 2012 for their political responsibility in the killing of peaceful protesters during the January 2011 uprising that led to Mubarak's ouster. Mubarak also faces charges of squandering public funds by selling natural gas to Israel at below market prices. Mubarak's first trial began in August 2011. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/86610.aspx
