Egypt ex-spy chief Mowafi to testify in Mubarak trial
Published in Ahram Online on 19 - 10 - 2013

Cairo Criminal Court will hold three secret sessions to hear the testimonies of former and current government officials, including former Director of Intelligence Mourad Mowafi, in the retrial of former president Hosni Mubarak
The Cairo Criminal Court will hear the testimony of former Director of Intelligence Mourad Mowafi on Saturday in the retrial of ousted president Hosni Mubarak, his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, and his Interior Minister Habib El-Adly.
Mowafy was appointed head of intelligence by Hosni Mubarak in early February 2011 after the soon-to-be-deposed head of state appointed his former spy chief Omar Suleiman as vice-president. He was later removed from the post by former president Mohamed Morsi in August 2012.
In addition to Mowafi, the court has earmarked sessions on October 19, 20 and 21 to hear testimonies from Mubarak's Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, former Interior Minister Ahmed Gamal El-Din, current Petroleum Minister Sherif Ismail, and former Supreme Council of the Armed Forces Major General Hassan El-Roweiny.
The three sessions will not be aired publicly for national security reasons.
The 85-year-old deposed president and El-Adly both received life sentences in June 2012 on charges of political responsibility for the killing of peaceful protesters during the January 2011 uprising that led to Mubarak's ouster.
Mubarak also faces charges of squandering public funds by selling natural gas to Israel below market prices.
Earlier verdicts were overturned in January 2013 by an appeals court on the grounds of procedural improprieties.
Mubarak's first trial began in August 2011.
