Egypt and Jordan on Thursday signed a renewed electricity exchange agreement for 2026, reinforcing regional energy cooperation and grid interconnection, the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy said. The contract was signed between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and Jordan's National Electric Power Company (NEPCO). The agreement is part of broader efforts to strengthen electricity interconnections with neighbouring countries and position Egypt as a regional energy hub linking Asia, Africa, and Europe. Egyptian Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat said interconnection projects play a critical role in enhancing energy security and supporting renewable energy integration, highlighting the Jordan link as a model of regional collaboration. During the year, Egypt transmitted 306.078 million kWh to Jordan, valued at $28.258 million. Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Al-Kharabsheh praised the partnership, noting plans to increase the interconnection capacity to 2,000 MW, supporting the broader Arab electricity interconnection project. The signing also aligns with Egypt's strategy to diversify energy sources, expand renewable energy projects, and modernise its national grid, while ensuring reliable electricity supply and operational efficiency. Esmat said Egypt continues to expand interconnections with Saudi Arabia, Greece, and Italy, enabling renewable energy exports and fostering regional cooperation and economic benefits.
