Egypt's Abou-Treika, Salah make 2013 African Player of the Year list Egyptian players Abou-Treika and Salah are nominated for the 2013 African Player of the Year award
Ahly playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika and Basel forward Mohamed Salah have been included in the nominees for the 2013 African Player of the Year, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Friday. The CAF released a 25-player list for the African Player of the Year award. The list included Ivory Coast's Yaya Toure, who won the title last season. Egyptian talisman Abou-Treika, 35, has been also included in the 21-player list of nominations for the best African-based player award, so were his Ahly teammates Walid Soliman and Ahmed Fathi. Abou-Treika, who was named as the best African-based player three times, announced last month that he will quit football after his team Ahly finish their campaign for the Club World Cup next December. "Winning the African Champions League and playing in the Club World Cup in Morocco, then goodbye to football and many thanks to all," Abou-Treika said via Twitter. The speedy 21-year-old Salah, who plays for Basel in the Swiss league, played exceptionally well this year. Salah scored six goals for his country in their World Cup qualification campaign and received considerable attention for his performance against Chelsea in the Champions League earlier this season. The African Player of the Year will be announced at the Glo-CAF Awards Gala on 9 January 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria.
